Louis Vuitton Authentication: What to Look For

Louis Vuitton is one of the most counterfeited luxury brands in the world, which makes authentication essential when buying pre-owned. At LLUXE, every LV piece is verified through Entrupy — but here's what our experts examine.

1. The Monogram Canvas

Authentic Louis Vuitton Monogram canvas is coated and has a consistent, slightly glossy finish. The LV logos, flowers, and circles should be perfectly symmetrical and never cut off at seams — LV carefully aligns the pattern during production. Fakes often have misaligned or asymmetrical prints.

2. Date Codes

Louis Vuitton has used date codes since the 1980s (replacing serial numbers). These are stamped inside the bag — typically on a leather tab or directly on the lining. The format changed over the decades, so the code should match the bag's era. Note: LV stopped using date codes in 2021, replacing them with microchips.

3. Stitching Quality

LV uses a specific golden-yellow thread for stitching, and the stitch count is consistent and precise — typically 5 stitches per centimetre on handles. Stitching should be tight, even, and never fraying.

4. Hardware & Zips

Authentic LV hardware is solid brass, weighty, and engraved with "Louis Vuitton" on most pieces. Zippers are typically from Éclair or S-Lock and should glide smoothly. Cheap, lightweight, or unbranded hardware is a warning sign.
